What is the Golden Circle?

The golden circle is a popular tourist route in Iceland. It covers the most stunning sights of the country and describes a loop of 300 km. (190 mi) starting and ending in Reykjavík. However, you could be able to enjoy this three great wonders of Icelandic nature in only one day, because they are located very close together. Golden circle is a paved road, so you don’t need a 4 WD car but you will need studded tires in the winter.

What’s about the route?
This awesome route consists of three very populars stops:
1. Thingvellir National Park
2. Haukadalur geysers area
3. Gullfoss waterfall

Thingvellir National Park:

The Thingvellir National Park mix nature, geology and history. It’s name means assembly fields and is due to historically it was the place where national parliament of Iceland, was established. It’s also a very important point because is the place where the tectonic plates of Eurasian and North American connect. Finally Thingvellir is situated on the northern shore of the lake Thingvallavatn with a visitor centre near the camping grounds with all the information of the area: history, nature, hiking trails, camping areas. You must stop here if you don’t want to miss something.

Tip: Don’t miss the Öxarárfoss waterfall and Thingvallavatn lake.

Haukadalur valley:

In this impressive geothermal valley you will meet the fantastic geysers, fumaroles and boiling mud pots. You can read this paragraph but you can’t imagine how is living this show. The most famous geysers are Geysir and Strokkur.
Strokkur spouts boiling water into the air at 100 ft (30 m) every 6 to 10 minutes. Eruptions at Geysir are more infrequent so if you are lucky, you could see a column of boiling water that sometimes reaches the 320 ft (70 m) in the air.

Tip: You have to be careful about geysers, mud pots and fumaroles because the high temperature.

Gullfoss waterfall:

This amazing waterfall will be one of the most stunning place in your trip to Iceland. It’s also know as the golden waterfall and it’s located in the canyon of the Hvítá river. It has two stages: one of 36 ft (11 m) and other of 69 ft (21 m). We recommend you to take the pathway along the edge of the waterfall to discover the greatest views.

Tip: The area surrounding the waterfall usually gets windy, so don’t forget to wear raincoats as you could get wet.

If you have time enough and are driving on your own, this short list are other amazing places to discover in the golden circle. However we don’t recommend you try to do all of them in the same day:

  • Þjórsárdalur valley: Hjálparfoss, Háifoss, Granni and Þjófafoss waterfalls
  • Fontana Geothermal Baths in the town of Laugarvatn
